An Unbelievable Turn of Events

Throughout the month of January, ONE members sent over 200,000 letters
to their members of Congress asking them to advocate for critical
poverty-fighting programs by signing “Dear Colleague” letters in the
House in Senate. In the end, 142 members of Congress signed on.

Yesterday afternoon, the House of Representatives voted not only to
recover the $1 Billion increase that ONE members were fighting to save -
but also for an additional $450 million – and we’ve been told the 142
signatures on these “Dear Colleague” letters played a critical role in
this unbelievable turn of events.

Please take a moment to thank your representative for signing the House
Lee/Shays “Dear Colleague” letter. (Note: These well-desereved thank
you messages will only goes to those who signed the Lee/Shays letter.)

Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Congressman Christopher Shays asked us to
send along these messages about ONE members’ work:

“I want to thank the ONE Campaign and all of its members for adding
their energy and their voices to the global struggle against HIV/AIDS
and extreme poverty. The letters and calls made by ONE campaign members
epitomize the power of what is possible when one person takes a stand
for what is right. Each of you has stood up to be counted because you
know that stopping the spread of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic is
possible, and that together we can turn that possibility into a
reality.” – Representative Barbara Lee (Democrat, CA-9)

“Although there have been remarkable achievements in combating HIV/AIDS
in Africa and around the world, the truth is we’ve not yet been able to
keep pace with its spread. I am grateful for the assistance of the ONE
Campaign in support of the Lee-Shays letter requesting additional
funding for programs to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. 92
members of congress signed the letter and we couldn’t have done it
without the ONE Campaign.” – Representative Christopher Shays
