Greatest Increase in Recent History

Just before 3pm today, the United States Senate passed the Smith-Dodd amendment by unanimous consent! This reversed a $2.2 billion cut to the international affairs budget.

In the last 36 hours, with our many coalition partners working together, ONE members jammed our nation’s leaders phone lines, urging the Senate to fully fund programs to help end extreme poverty by supporting this bipartisan amendment.

The United States Senate is now set to increase the international affairs budget by $3.7 billion, (bringing the total for 2008 to $36.5 billion), the greatest one year increase for the global poverty movement in recent history. This money that we fought for will go toward critical programs for clean water, life-saving medication, education, economic growth as well as diplomatic programs, in the world’s poorest countries.

The budget process isn’t complete yet, but we are well on our way, and today’s vote was a true victory for the global poverty movement.

ONE members pulled off a historic feat today, something we plan to make just a precursor for many great things to come.
