Going to Town(Hall) with Hillary and Bill Clinton

On Friday, Hillary and Bill Clinton came to New Hampshire for a series of town hall meetings and events.

Last time Hillary was in town, she ran into ONE members thanking her and Sen. Smith (R) for the Education for All Act that, if passed, would help enroll millions of children in the developing world into basic primary schooling.

This time, all across the Granite State, Hillary and Bill Clinton encountered many ONE volunteers in ONE Vote ’08 shirts, and many more wearing ONE bands.

At their first stop in Keene, New Hampshire, ONE members put “ONE” lawn signs all around the event site to make sure that the poorest people on Earth were remembered. ONE’s Marine Michael took the whole family to see Hillary and Bill in Nashua, New Hampshire, and was able to band them both.

Michael told me:

“I took the opportunity to thank the president for his work with the Clinton Foundation, specifically his most recent success in sharply reducing the cost of ARVs. I told him I thought it would mean that he was responsible for saving millions of lives and I was immensely proud to be an American because of his efforts. Even as a lifelong Republican the words did not get stuck in my throat – my voice was clear and firm and I meant it.”

At a speech in Manchester, New Hampshire, Hillary was seen by ONE members sporting a ONE band, and behind her on stage was newly confirmed ONE Ambassador and NH State Senator Maggie Hassen wearing her ONE band too.

Later in the day, ONE member Lindsay Hanson was able to talk with both Hillary and Bill Clinton and mentioned her work with the ONE Campaign. She told me that Bill Clinton said “Bless you”.

Susan is the President of ONE.

“We hope that ONE Vote will change millions of lives for the better.

“ONE is an idea, the idea that extreme poverty transcends party boundaries.

“We’re going to talk a lot about how saving lives makes our country more secure, but millions of ONE members know that what we are doing is fundamentally the right thing.
We have put together the best team to make the best – and largest – campaign around a set of issues that has ever existed.

“ONE is not alone in this endeavor, we have more than a hundred partners, some the best political minds in America today, and the Gates Foundation, which has helped make this whole thing possible.

“While we have all these great folks, the real action is taking place outside of Washington, DC. We have live satellite links to the 4 early primary states, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.”

From Iowa:
Dr. Kenneth Quinn, former ambassador to Cambodia and Director of World Food Promise

From Nevada:
Former Nevada Governor Bob Miller.

From New Hampshire:
Michael Castaldo, the ONE Marine, is speaking on behalf New Hampshire

From South Carolina:
Former Governor Jim Hodges of South Carolina

Catching Up With Gov. Mike Huckabee

At 7:15am this morning I met 2008 presidential candidate and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, his staff, New Hampshire’s Republican Party Chairman and several reporters, for a 5k run through downtown Manchester, New Hampshire.

We had a long discussion about ONE and the issues facing Africa. Huckabee has worn the ONE band in the past but this was a great opportunity to discuss the Campaign’s objectives and our shared interest in the health and welfare of children.

Our Republican Chairman Fergus Cullen (a skilled and fast runner) kept us on a vigorous pace through the rain and unusually cold conditions. Fergus is interested in ONE and what activities we will be invloved with in New Hampshire. My ONE tshirt, as well as in the shots of the AP photographer, will make NH’s WMUR television tonight. Go ONE!

Texans Take Their Talk to Congress

Texan constituents Jan Anderson and I, and Ugandan AIDS advocate
Agnes Nyamayarwo, met with District Director Rod Givens and Special Assistant Julie Newman of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s Dallas office last Tuesday.

I introduced the ONE Campaign and its local and national activities, noting that ONE counts 138,000 Texans within its ranks, and that 1,700 of those reside in the Congresswoman Johnson’s district. Jan explained the emergencies of extreme poverty and global disease.

Then, Agnes described the impact HIV and AIDS has had on her family in Africa. Only after her husband died of AIDS did Agnes discover that she was HIV positive and that she had unknowingly passed the virus along to her youngest child. Now on anti-retroviral drugs, Agnes continues to work with TASO (The Uganda AIDS Organization) and ONE to advocate for lifesaving medications for the vast majority of Africans who have none.

Afterwards, District Director Rod Givens let the delegation know that we were preaching to the choir. Congresswoman Johnson and some of her colleagues in Washington have been behind many of the ONE Campaign’s issues for quite some time. Mr. Givens had personally seen first-hand the effects of extreme poverty and global disease while living in Nigeria. He asked that the ONE Dallas group continue to forward requests related to these issues to his office and even asked for additional white wristbands.

Finally, Mr. Givens stressed how important it was for those involved to vote, so that elected officials serving in all branches of government are sensitive to, and able to act on, issues of extreme poverty and global disease.

Welcome to New York

Some awesome volunteers came by this morning to help us get people checked in. On the right is Anne Taylor who lives here in Manhattan and on the left is Judy Tobar from Queens.

Charlie Nguyen who is running around the room making sure that everyone has a nametag and are getting to know one another.

I tried to talk with them all a bit more, but there is quite the line of folks checking in. As you can see in the picture the line wraps around and goes out the door. Looks like we should be a capacity crowd today!

Next, people chose to be in faith or campus groups, or to join regional groups (Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs or Fort Collins).

During the sessions, people brainstormed what they can do in their communities to advocate for the fight against extreme poverty. Each person in each group came up with at least one action to commit to, wrote it on a post-it note, and stuck that post-it note to a large poster board for everyone to see.
