ONE volunteers in Nashville joined partner agency Blood:Water Mission last week for their annual Water:Walk in honor of World Water Day. Tennesseans gathered to walk a mile in the women’s shoes who carry water to their families in Africa every day. Participants started downtown, carrying plastic jugs and buckets, and walked a mile to the river.

They then filled their containers and carried them a mile back in silence remembering the women and children across the world for whom this is a daily task.

Among the volunteers was Jars of Clay lead singer and Blood:Water Mission founder Dan Haseltine, who stopped by the ONE table before the walk to sign a letter to Representative Cooper urging him to protect lifesaving programs in this year’s budget.

When people in Chicago think of St. Patrick’s Day, they think of the Chicago River dyed bright green and participating in our massive parade for the holiday. But as a ONE volunteer, I thought of St. Patrick’s Day as the perfect opportunity to educate a group of people about our cause.

In the beginning, I was very nervous about walking up to strangers on the street and talking to them about ONE and how they can help fight extreme poverty around the world. But, once I reached the Chicago River and saw how festive everyone was, I gained confidence. My nervousness soon turned into excitement, and with the two other volunteers, we started rocking out by the green river and getting signatures. It was amazing to see that people actually cared about our cause and were willing to listen to us, laugh with us, and even tell us a little about themselves.
We also walked over to Millennium Park near the parade, and it was simply amazing. People were so friendly and approachable, and we had the opportunity to speak to big groups (which meant more signatures). We were able to talk to all kinds of people — tourists, foreigners, families, students and local Chicagoans.

A little rain didn’t stop us. We almost had to take a canoe to the Power in the Park’s “Yoga Against Extreme Poverty & AIDS” event, featuring ONE, this past Saturday.

It sure would have been easy to stay in bed on Saturday morning as we heard the rain pounding away on our roof but about 35 people still braved the torrential downpour in West Los Angeles, making the event a success. We raised awareness about ONE and how they hold governments accountable to follow through with commitments to address extreme poverty and preventable disease.

This past Sunday, New Jersey ONE members had the opportunity to attend Senator Menendez’s third annual Women of Distinction Awards in Jersey City to celebrate Women’s History Month.

Six New Jersey women were presented with the Evangelina Menendez Trailblazer Award, which was named in honor of the Senator’s late mother. Because of his mother, a quiet yet strong Cuban immigrant, Senator Menendez understands the importance of empowering women, not only in New Jersey and our country, but around the world.

ONE Illinois member Jivko Chiderov reports:

One of our Illinois senators, Senator Mark Kirk suffered a stroke in January. Thankfully he seems to be recovering well.
Senator Kirk is no stranger to the fight against extreme poverty and disease. In the past, he has fought hard to make sure poverty-fighting programs got the funding they deserve. And in 2009, he was a lead author on a proposal to help make US development aid more effective.
A few days ago ONE members from all over the state signed our online get-well card for the Senator, which we made into a large poster for him. Yesterday, ONE member Genoveva Petrova joined me in delivering the poster from Illinois ONE members to the Senator’s downtown Chicago office. The Senator’s Press Secretary, Erin Athas, met with us and accepted the card and our well wishes on the Senator’s behalf. She was glad to hear that we were keeping up with Senator Kirk’s progress and said that he enjoys reading the get-well cards he receives, and in fact he keeps them all in his room. Erin thought the Senator would be excited and happy to see our poster and read the thoughtful notes from Illinois ONE members.

A great guest post from ONE member Sarah Stone in Waterloo, Ontario:
I recently had the privilege to travel to Ottawa with ONE and represent the thousands of Canadians who lent their voice to the petition calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to honor his commitments to the world’s poor and protect Canadian foreign aid in the coming budget.
I, along with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) representatives Robyn Chatwin-Davies and Christopher Weller had the opportunity to meet with MP Lois Brown, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of International Cooperation Bev Oda, to present the petition and discuss the work of EWB and ONE.

My interest in ONE started simply because I saw a commercial on TV. The public service announcement was “The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity.” The message was forward and direct; all ONE asked for was my voice. A message like that from some of the greatest voices on the planet, I knew that adding my voice was the least I could do. Then, I set up my Twitter account, followed online and began adding my voice. I followed the ONE tweets, blogs and articles and soon they became my teacher.
