For the second time in less than a week, ONE members caught up with both Ken Buck and Senator Michael Bennet after a debate in Colorado.
Last night’s debate in Denver was the fourth Senate debate this election season, and ONE volunteer and congressional district leader Valerie Bobalek and I arrived in our ONE shirts ready to meet the candidates.
After an exciting debate, Valerie and I ran to the front of the stage. We spoke with Ken Buck first. It was our third meeting with Mr. Buck in a week, and before Valerie could thank him for listening to the concerns of ONE members, Buck thanked us for coming out and posed for a picture.
Afterward, we found Senator Bennet who (once again) positively proclaimed, “You guys are everywhere!” as he did at last week’s Pueblo, Colorado debate.
The candidates had many hands to shake on their way out the door, but ONE’s presence stood out. It’s important in these tough economic times that our leaders understand that their constituents support development programs and that it fosters greater national security and global leadership.

“You guys are everywhere!” That’s what Sen. Michael Bennet said when he saw ONE at the third Colorado Senate debate last night in Pueblo, Colorado. ONE members Paul and Tatsue, along with Tatsue’s two children, met Colorado Senate candidates Ken Buck and Sen. Bennet at the debate and expressed the importance of fighting extreme poverty and disease. The small auditorium was packed with about 400 people, but both candidates gladly took the time to step to the side for photos with us.

ONE members with Ken Buck
Colorado Senate candidate Ken Buck held a meet ‘n greet in Colorado Springs on Sunday. ONE volunteers Megan Marsh, and Regina and Mark Hopewell caught up with him at the event to thank him for the time his staff has given to ONE members’ concerns.
Helping the world’s poorest people help themselves to fight diseases like AIDS and malaria reflects the best of American values and demonstrates our leadership globally. Megan, Mark and Regina expressed the importance of building upon the work that evangelical Christian leaders such as Rick Warren, Bill Hybels and Franklin Graham have done to fight poverty in Africa.

Last Thursday, ONE Vote held a training and Lazarus Effect screening in Colorado Springs to highlight the life-saving antiretroviral treatments that are helping millions suffering with HIV/AIDS in Africa. The documentary struck a chord with ONE members who were visibly moved, and wanted to learn how they could work with ONE Vote to encourage continued American leadership in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease in the world’s poorest places.
The very next day, Congressional District Leader Megan Marsh took what she had learned, and turned it into action for ONE, at a Senate debate in Colorado Springs between Democratic Senator Michael Bennet and Republican Ken Buck. We arrived early, grabbed seats in the third row, and afterward, we caught up with both Ken Buck and Michael Bennet! Both candidates immediately recognized ONE, and were excited to see ONE Vote out on the trail again, continuing its advocacy on behalf of the world’s poorest people!

… And talked the talk with 260 people who signed up to join ONE at the 23rd annual AIDS Walk Colorado. AIDS Walk Colorado is the Rocky Mountain Region’s largest and most successful HIV and AIDS fundraiser.
Fifteen ONE volunteers participated in this year’s walk and collectively raised $100 for HIV/AIDS programs. Congressional candidate and several members of his campaign staff also walked in support of ONE, happily donning ONE bands. Overall, 8,200 people participated in this year’s AIDS Walk and raised more than $400,000 dollars.
In addition, we’re proud to announce that ONE Colorado’s brother-sister congressional district leader team, Megan and Joe Marsh, participated in the walk and were even featured in the Huffington Post in advance of the event.
Congratulations to all of the volunteers who helped make this ONE Vote Colorado’s most successful event yet!

Thousands of miles of separation are not enough to keep two sister churches from running together to save lives. On Saturday, the International Anglican Church in Colorado Springs and sister church in Kibali, Rwanda hosted a race that raised more than $12,000 for the HIV/AIDS wing of the Kibali Health Clinic. The race took place simultaneously on the two continents with more than 380 runners in the United States and more than 250 in Rwanda.
ONE members Regina Hopewell and Tess Cox participated in the race. Regina submitted an excellent op-ed to the Colorado Springs Gazette about Rwanda’s progress.
Tess recently visited the clinic in Kibali, and while signing up new members, she emphasized the importance of the run and ONE’s Global Fund petition.
“As a pediatric provider, I know how important it is to care for pregnant mothers and that babies be born healthy. It only takes about 40 cents a day to provide the medication that mothers need in order to deliver a healthy, HIV free child,” said Tess.
Before and after the race, ONE members Tess, Regina, Mark and Andrea signed up more than 90 people with ONE, and 15 of them donned ONE T-shirts for the race. Congratulations to all the runners and visit Run for Rwanda’s website to see results, pictures and videos from the event.
